Old Fort Pierre was built on the historical site, which is
believed to be the first spot visited by Europeans on South
Dakota soil. Its claim is based on the uncovering of the
Verendrye plate. The plate was engraved by Peter de La Verendrye
with his name and date, 1741 and then buried. The plate remained
undiscovered for 170 years until it was accidentally found by
school children playing in the area in 1913.
The original Fort Pierre, built at the confluence of the
Missouri and Bad Rivers in 1817, was a fur trading post and was
called Fort Teton. The early settlers of this community also
settled the recreation area close by, known as Farm Island. Fort
Pierre was rebuilt in 1822 as Fort Tecumseh and in 1832 it was
rebuilt again in its present location, as Fort Pierre Choteau,
later shortened to Fort Pierre.
Every fourth of July people from all over flock to Fort Pierre
for the annual PRCA Rodeo to see "Where the West Begins". Named
one of the top 20 Best Rural Towns in the West by American
Cowboy magazine Fort Pierre has a wonderful old west atmosphere
with all the larger city conveniences. Come visit us and we'll
